Into The Distance

“During a solo exhibition I had in 2023 in Swakopmund, Namibia, raising funds for the ‘Africat Foundation’, I was subsequently invited as a guest to Okonjima (home of Africat) to see what goes on behind the scenes and meet the team. It was on this visit I got the opportunity to venture on foot in search of good reference material for future paintings. It is always a privilege and thrill to see Cheetahs in their natural habitat, even more so whilst walking and being able to get down to their level enabling a different and more intimate perspective. It was during this time that I managed to snap some decent shots (quite unusual for me!) including one in particular that stood out and subsequently was used as reference for the portrait which was completed in pastel back in my Cape Town studio over a period of about three weeks.

The title for “Into The Distance” was inspired by the opening lines of “Learning To Fly”, a Pink Floyd track from the album “A Momentary Lapse of Reason” which I was listening to whilst working on the portrait, in conjunction with the fact that Cheetah can focus on potential prey from a distance of up to 5km, it seemed quite poignant especially given the look this cat had in his eyes!” – Paul B.
